The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), under the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) conducted the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign on 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Mapping and Assessment later last week at Honey’s Hotel, Matiao, City of Mati.
The Geohazard Mapping and Assessment is an on-going priority program of the DENR, which is being implemented by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to identify areas in the city which are susceptible or vulnerable to various geologic hazards, or geohazards.
Thus, local officials and Punong Barangays of the city government and the Development Officers of various agencies and schools underwent the program’s IEC, namely, rapid assessment survey to generate geohazard maps that will indicate which areas are prone to natural dangers like landslides, flooding and ground subsidence.
The activity was conducted for the different stakeholders to increase their awareness and preparedness on various natural hazards, as well as teach them on the proper use of the geohazard maps. Geohazards cannot be totally prevented, but their impact on people and the environment may be lessened or mitigated.
