City of Mati under the leadership of Mayor Carlo P. Rabat contributes significantly to Davao Oriental being awarded as malaria and filaria free province as shared by DOH XI Regional Director Dr. Abdullah Mohammed during its conferment ceremony yesterday after noon at Provincial Capitol Covered Court.
Filariasis is an infectious tropical disease caused by any one of several thread-like parasitic round worms. The two species of worms most often associated with this disease are Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi. The larval form of the parasite transmits the disease to humans by the bite of a mosquito.
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, called “malaria vectors.” There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species –P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat.
The City’s recognition was received by the City Health Officer Dr. Benhur G. Catbagan, CHO Filaria Coordinator Millet Chang and CHO Medtech Norma Muyco.
